“Um.. because you are loopier than Flacky McPsycho, Mayor of Crazytown?”
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
I decided to listen to this book on through Audible as I had heard amazing things about the full cast reading. Honestly its the best decision I ever made!
The full cast really lends itself to the format of this book (If you hadn’t heard or didn’t know, the Illuminae Files are told through exactly that format, a collection of files) and I’d say actually makes it easier to follow. I had been intimidated to pick up the physical book just from the sheer size of it (don’t worry I WILL be picking up the physical book as soon as I can), the audio really engages you from the first page.
I feel as though I haven’t so emotionally engaged in a story in quiet some time. I genuinely started crying on my way to work while listening to it. Yes, I am that crazy person on the train, but you know what… thats ok. So if you are ready for an emotional and utterly entangled in the story to the point where you don’t want to stop listening this book if for you!
After finishing it, I was honestly emotionally destroyed in the best way possible. The characters were developed really well and there were some plot twists that I didn’t see coming, which I always love.
Considering the different format of this book the world is developed particularly well. I’ve already jumped into ‘Gemina‘, the second book in the series.
I can’t really think of anything negative to say, maybe that there was at least one plot twist I kind of guessed but with so many unexpected plot twists I’m not that upset by it!
