New Book Annotation Method

As a reader I don’t like to write in my books. It was something I used to do when I was younger but now the thought of drawing a single line within the pages of my pristine printed books makes me want to cry.

This meant I needed to come up with a different method for annotating my books.

I began with the most logical step, using page flags to mark different important, funny, cute, happy moments in the text. I tried to colour code them but honestly it was all a bit much!

I decided to try the method of using a cue card to take notes every 50 pages. I’ve started to use this in my read of ‘Heir of Fire’ By Sarah J. Maas. I feel like it works well with the world density of these books.

I’ve found it helps me to keep track of where I am and what I’ve read when I get distracted or loose understanding of why a character is doing something.

To do this method i use two things:
* A cue card
* A pen or pencil

I find it an easy way to reflect on the part of the story I’ve just read as well as being helpful for someone who usually reads on the go.

What method do you use when annotating books?

  1. I love the idea of taking notes every 50pg! I’ve tried taking notes before while reading but I’ve always just jotted them down as I was reading, and I stopped doing it because it became too difficult for me to stay focused on the book. I feel like stopping once every 50pg to take notes would be much better. I may have to give it a try!

  2. I have used a highlighter in certain books usually a memoir, biography or some type of self help or Christian book, but this is a great idea especially for writing reviews which I do alot and I also blog books for Lifeway but I get 2 free titles a month in exchange for reviews! Can’t beat that who doesn’t love free books! I’m always reading! By the way I love your blog I’ve read it on the feed so much but this is the first time I’ve been on it and seen your theme and all! It’s GRAND! And I always have packs of index cards I will be using this Thanks!

      1. Yes! I saw how others really liked the idea to with the index cards! It’s amazing how many people read! I couldn’t imagine a world without books! My first bookshelf is a dark wood I’m thinking of painting it. it stores so many books I don’t want to get rid of it and I’m using the bottom shelf in a desk I have. I’m definitely going to have to invest in another. My point excuse my language your bookshelves are bad ass what can I say! Love all the colors to and of course I have all the Harry Potter loved the books but not the movies! Hmmm… People ll say really! The first one Ididn’t stop until over 350 pages and my boyfriend was telling me he was evil the entire time I was reading it.

  3. Exactly right if I do it while reading I may as well write down the entire book. This is doable, I love this idea!
